1) Efficacy, effect

(Tablet) (Syrup) (Suspension)

1. Treatment and prevention of herpes simplex virus infections of skin and mucous membranes, including primary and recurrent genital herpes

2. It is effective in treating herpes zoster virus infection, especially acute pain. On the other hand, its effectiveness for postherpetic neuralgia has not yet been proven.

3. Treatment of chickenpox in children over 2 years of age

2) Usage, dosage

○ Adult

1. Treatment of herpes simplex virus infection

1) Acyclovir is administered 5 times a day, 200 mg once, at 4-hour intervals for 5 days. In case of severe primary infection, treatment can be extended.

2) For patients with severe immune dysfunction (after bone marrow transplant, etc.) or patients with digestive tract malabsorption, the single dose can be increased to 400 mg or the administration route can be changed to intravenous injection.

3) It is advisable to administer as soon as possible after infection, and in case of relapse, it is advisable to administer when prodromal symptoms or lesions first appear.

2. Prevention of herpes simplex infection in patients with normal immune function

1) Administer this drug 4 times a day, 200 mg once, at approximately 6-hour intervals. Alternatively, it can be administered twice a day, 400 mg once, at 12-hour intervals.

2) Afterwards, the dose may be reduced to 200 mg 2 to 3 times a day to confirm its effectiveness.

3) In order to check the natural change process of the disease, long-term treatment patients should periodically stop treatment every 6 to 12 months to check.

3. Prevention of herpes simplex infection in patients with weakened immune function

1) This drug is administered 4 times a day, 200 mg each time, at approximately 6-hour intervals.

2) For patients with severe immune dysfunction (such as after bone marrow transplantation) or digestive system malabsorption, the single dose can be increased to 400 mg or the administration route can be changed to intravenous injection.

3) Administer during the period of infection risk.

4. Treatment of shingles infection

1) This drug is administered 5 times a day, 800 mg once, at approximately 4-hour intervals, excluding bedtime, for a total of 7 days.

2) For patients with severe immune dysfunction or digestive system malabsorption, intravenous administration should be considered.

3) It is best to administer it as soon as possible after infection, and the sooner it is treated, the better the effect.

○ Children

1. Treatment of herpes simplex infection and prevention of herpes simplex infection in patients with weakened immune function

1) 2 years or older: Same as adults.

2) Under 2 years of age: Administer 1/2 of the adult dose.

3) There is still no clear data on the prevention of herpes simplex virus infection in patients with normal immune function.

2. Treatment of chickenpox in children over 2 years of age: Administer this drug at a dose of 20 mg per kg of body weight (maximum 800 mg per time), 4 times a day for 5 days.

Treatment is better the sooner the chickenpox rash appears, preferably within 24 hours after the rash.

○ Patients with renal impairment

Patients with renal impairment are prone to mental and nervous system side effects, so caution should be exercised, such as extending the administration interval or reducing the dose.

1. Treatment of herpes simplex infection

The oral dose is usually not higher than the cumulative dose resulting from intravenous administration. However, for patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 10 mL per minute), it is recommended to administer 200 mg of this drug every 12 hours.

2. Treatment of shingles virus infection

1) For patients with a creatinine clearance of less than 10 mL per minute, it is recommended to administer this drug at a dose of 800 mg twice a day, at approximately 12-hour intervals.

2) For patients with a creatinine clearance of 10 to 25 mL per minute, it is recommended to administer this drug at a dose of 800 mg 3 times a day, at approximately 8-hour intervals.
